PROJECT OVERVIEW

Geovert was engaged to enhance safety measures at Yellowtail Dam through comprehensive rockfall and icefall protection systems, addressing immediate hazards while ensuring uninterrupted power generation. The Design and Construct project, undertaken through the Northern Colorado USBR service contract, encompassed critical infrastructure protection across multiple dam sectors, including both abutments and the powerhouse area.

The project's remote location and complex access requirements around the dam demanded innovative approaches to material handling and installation, particularly for precision-critical rock removal and protective structure installation within stringent power shutdown windows.

Rockfall Mitigation
PROJECT SOLUTION

The multifaceted solution integrated systematic scaling and removal of loose rock from both dam abutments with the installation of specialized rockfall protection systems adapted for the site's unique geological conditions.

The team engineered and installed custom ice protection systems at critical infrastructure points, developing techniques that protected the river environment while preventing debris entry. Meticulous planning ensured all installations coordinated with planned power shutdowns, minimizing impact on facility operations.

The completed protection systems deliver comprehensive security for critical infrastructure and personnel, significantly reducing risk from both rockfall and icefall events. Dam operators now navigate downstream infrastructure with enhanced safety, supported by engineered protection systems that accommodate both seasonal and long-term geological hazards.
