PROJECT OVERVIEW
In September 2013, a catastrophic slip of 40,000 cubic meters forced the closure of New Zealand's State Highway 6, with subsequent nighttime closures due to extreme rockfall hazards. The slip face, extending over 250 meters upslope, harbored unstable rocks exceeding the size of 20-foot shipping containers.
Geovert was commissioned to design and construct a comprehensive rockfall protection system to enable safe, continuous operation of this critical transportation corridor.

PROJECT SOLUTION
The engineered solution comprised a strategically positioned three-tier barrier system designed to manage high-energy rockfall events. The uppermost installation, positioned 250 meters above the highway, featured a 5-meter high, 3000kJ capacity barrier. Two 6-meter high, 5000kJ capacity attenuators were installed at 150 meters and 50 meters respectively. The lowest barrier incorporated a sophisticated 35-tonne high-tensile steel ROCCO ring net drape system, engineered to control and channel debris to designated collection points for efficient maintenance access.
Construction execution proved particularly challenging due to severe winter conditions and continuous rockfall hazards. The project team implemented rigorous safety protocols and monitoring systems to ensure personnel protection while working in the active rockfall zone. System validation included multiple high-energy impact tests utilizing controlled blasting of oversized boulders to verify design parameters. The collaborative approach between Geovert, NZTA, Opus, and Sicon Fergusson enabled successful project delivery under extreme conditions, ultimately restoring permanent public access to this vital transportation route.
