PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Victorian Government invested $53 million in the Great Ocean Road Resilience Project to safeguard against geotechnical risks. As part of this investment, Regional Roads Victoria took action to improve safety on the Great Ocean Road by undertaking complex rock removal works on the cliff at this iconic location where the mountains meet the sea.

Rockfall Mitigation
PROJECT SOLUTION

As part of these works, two projects were delivered including the design and construction of a temporary rockfall protection system with anchored containers to allow the road to stay open during scaling works up to 100m above the road. After the containers were in place, we inspected the slope and developed a plan to safely remove overhangs and block columns. By drilling and breaking the rock into manageable sized bits ready for removal we removed Circa 5700t from the face by using scaling bars and air bags, with 95% being captured behind our barrier preventing damage to the road limiting impact on users. We installed DCP rock bolts throughout the project with very challenging access.
